In March, Triax headed to Long Beach, California to participate in BuiltWorlds’ Tech Toy Chest at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Convention. As always, the event focused on construction safety, culminating in the ABC and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) signing a memorandum to come together to improve safety and health on jobsites nationwide. Together, the organizations hope to focus on risk prevention and the need for students to choose occupational safety as a career. We’re recapping their developments below.
The Pairing of ABC and BCSP
Both ABC and BCSP are committed to developing incident- and accident-free jobsites across the country, and their agreement signifies the industry’s desire to make workplaces safer. Through the partnership, employers and individual laborers will receive additional tools and means to strengthen existing safety policies and develop new protocols and best practices. According to the memo, the organizations plan to:
- Work together to create best practices for occupational health and safety within the construction industry;
- Develop new career opportunities in occupational health and safety and make them known via electronic and print media;
- Help develop and strengthen recruiting in such a way that more students enter into the occupational health and safety field;
- Support existing measures to improve safety across jobsites;
- Actively participate in conferences and workshops to discuss workers’ health and safety; and
- Facilitate the spread of research findings related to occupational safety and health to the relevant professionals.
The partnership will undoubtedly help make the construction industry as a whole safer, more productive, and more profitable.
Using the STEP Process Could Make Companies Safer
During the annual conference, the ABC also put focus on its Safety Performance Evaluation Process, or STEP, which they can make companies up to 670% safer and reduces incidents by as much as 85%. The STEP process focuses on proactive measures, such as thorough new-hire orientations, the establishment of a safety committee for each jobsite, analysis of near-miss incidents, and site-specific safety orientations.
Spot-r by Triax at the BuiltWorlds Tech Toy Chest
Another important segment at the ABC Convention 2018 was the inaugural BuiltWorlds Tech Toy Chest, which highlighted the latest and most innovative construction technology to help contractors boost efficiency and safety and drive the industry forward. Featured companies included NoteVault, a mobile phone-based voice app that would allow for faster incident report and construction data creation, to Uplift Data Partners, which developed an entire drone pilot network to analyze aerial data.

This year’s ABC Convention was a successful one as most in the construction industry look forward to the partnership between ABC and the BCSP.
